1.Can more than one person paint the same state?
Yes! We will need several hundred books painted, and so we will have to have multiples of each state. I've added a page with the number of books for each state, so you can see where we stand. Statistics
2. Who is organizing this?
Deb Malewski, a decorative painter with 4 published books, almost 100 pattern packets, and is a Royal Ambassador for the Royal Brush Company. Deb lives in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, with her husband Paul, who is the police chief there, and her daughter Andrea who is a student at Western Michigan University. Also giving great advice and help on this project are Barb Crockett and Phyliss Eaton, also from Eaton Rapids. It is Phyliss Eaton, from Eaton Crafts, who is the wood supplier for this project.
3. When do I have to have it painted?
The official deadline is October 24th, 2005. Please don't wait until the last minute! Then all the ornaments will have to be photographed and cataloged and shipped in one box to the Library of Congress. They will be setting up their tree sometime during the first week of December, and it will remain up until about the first week of January. Due to the security involved in shipping the ornaments, no one may ship directly to the Library, and they MUST be recieved by the deadline to be included in the collection.
4. Can I use a pattern for my design?
Yes. Original designs would be nice, if you can, though! Please be mindful of copyrights if you use a pattern that you didn't design.
5. What colors can I use if I don't have the paints specified? Feel free to substitute with similar colors. The ones listed are just general guidelines so that they are all compatible.
6. Can I add a little political statement about the president and or the war on my book cover? No! The tree will be viewed by a large number of people from across the United Sates. It will probably be published and photographed. Anything deemed inappropriate will not be included on the tree.
7. I live in the winter in one state, and the summer in another; which one should I paint? Which ever you prefer, but if one state is more populated with painters than the other, paint the one with less painters, as this will help insure that each state is represented. If you live part time in Florida, for example, it might be better if you paint your original home state.
8. We are invited to a ceremony for the tree? Will they fly us all there? Sorry, no! Wouldn't that be wonderful, though! The official holiday celebration is December 14th at the Library of Congress, in the Great Hall of the Jefferson Building. All participating artists are invited.
9. I ordered a book, and there is a hole for the hanger but there is no hanger included! We decided to attach the hangers ourselves when the books are returned, figuring that they might get lost in the shipping process.
10. Should the title of the book be on the front, or down the spine. Both places are fine, the cover is the part that will be seen the most.
11. Can I order more than one book?
I now have to limit the sales to one per person, as we can't keep up with the demand.
The books are made here in the USA by hand by Phyliss and Harold Eaton.
